Higher education is a critical link between learning and earning, which allows young people to thrive and transition to the pursuit of sustainable futures. Investments in higher education for refugees strengthen the national education systems in which they participate, to the benefit of host communities, students, and institutions. With higher education that is inclusive of refugees, all students can benefit from a richer academic environment, enhanced social cohesion, and improved academic infrastructure and resources.
Education protects refugee children and youth from forced recruitment into armed groups, child labor, sexual exploitation, and child marriage. Education also strengthens community resilience.Education empowers by giving refugees the knowledge and skills to live productive, fulfilling, and independent lives.Education enlightens refugees, enabling them to learn about themselves and the world around them while striving to rebuild their lives and communities.
Sarah and her family (6 members) came to Jordan in 2013 after losing her father during the Syrian civil war. In the beginning, her family suffered greatly, but things improved after she joined HHRD’s Orphan Support Program, where she received educational and financial support. She studied hard, finished high school, and enrolled in HHRD’s Higher Education Scholarship Project. She graduated recently and wishes to achieve her ambition of becoming a professional accountant.
She extends her appreciation to all the generous donors who support higher education for Syrian refugee students.
