In August 2023, millions of people in Southeast Bangladesh face destruction caused by extreme tropical cyclones believed to be triggered by the phenomenon known as "EL Nino," as noted by climate experts. While the full impact of EL Nino in Asia is anticipated between September 2023 and March 2024, parts of Southeast Bangladesh are already facing hazards, underscoring deteriorating weather conditions.

As of August 10th, 2023, many areas in Southeast Bangladesh are experiencing significant rainfall, with some places receiving 2-3.4 inches, and others even more, such as Bandarban with 34 inches, Chittagong with 37 inches, Cox's Bazar with 12 inches, and Rangamati with 24 inches in the past 10 days. Chittagong, Bangladesh's second-largest city, has experienced unprecedented rainfall since August 2023. By August 10th, 2023, the region has faced devastating floods and landslides resulting from continuous heavy rains, causing the loss of 16 lives with three individuals still missing.
The recent crisis has profoundly impacted 1.2 million people, including 426,733 children (36% of the affected), 16,479 expectant/lactating mothers, 17,772 disabled individuals, and 67,981 elderly struggling with the aftermath. Over 16,000 homes have been destroyed, and 1,348 shelters are open. Agriculture has also been hit hard, with 86,176 acres of crops affected, causing economic losses of US $16.3 million. HHRD is responding through local partners and is committed to aiding those in need amidst this critical situation. Urgent needs include clean water, meals, healthcare, dry food, and hygiene items.
HHRD has been involved in a series of impactful initiatives for local communities in Bangladesh. Through our Orphans Support Program, 750 children have been sponsored, 5,508 shelter homes have been established for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar, and 460 students are benefiting from our Education Support Program and Learning Centers. Apart from the above-mentioned work, HHRD has provided aid to locals through healthcare and nutrition programs serving over 200,000 patients. Additionally, programs such as Skills Development, free cataract eye surgeries, and water projects have benefited 1.6 million individuals since 2017. Our Ramadan, Qurbani, and Winter Relief Programs have reached 125,000+, 300,000+, and 40,000+ beneficiaries respectively since 2017.
